Introduction and background
Under the prevailing circumstances in Ethiopia, Radio is a powerful and more preferable disseminator of information. Program scheduling is highly flexible and radio stations can act with great speed to transmit information to a large number of people.
As compared to other population centers, Addis Ababa residents have better access to Radio with greater capacity to receive information on issues related to business. Radio transmits information to the wider audience in Ethiopia, and indeed in Addis Ababa which is the operational area of the Addis Ababa Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations (AACCSA).
AACCSA has leased an air time from the Ethiopian Radio FM 97.1 station to transmit its radio program famously known as the Voice of Addis Chamber (VAC). The reason for leasing an airtime from a state-owned radio had been the absence of privately operated radio stations in the country during the launching of VAC. Although private media has been permitted by law, the number of private radio stations is very insignificant.
The basic objective of the Voice of Addis Chamber (VAC) is to serve the business community at large by providing quality and timely business information helpful to promote trade and investment, stimulate new businesses and create real jobs.
It also deals with success stories, Women in Business and also covers topics such as Business Help, Business Talk, Science and Technology Tips, Tax and Civic Education, which are targeted at encouraging the participation of the business community in socio-economic and policy processes.
The Chamber's Radio Program initiative is truly innovative in its nature and can easily be replicated in other situations and locations. The need for huge investment is minimal because VAC utilizes existing infrastructure in the form of an established Radio station from which airtime is leased for transmission of programs. The program's impact on the business community and its potential for replication elsewhere had made it exceptionally unique and deserving further support.
It was amidst the above discussed scenario that AACCSA launched in April, 2001 its own Radio Program (Voice of Addis Chamber) to be aired on the Government's FM Radio Station which had started operations in 2000.
As of 8 July 2009, VAC shifted from the National FM 97.1 to the Addis Ababa City Administration FM 96.3 radio station. The need to make the radio program self-reliant in terms of operational income and the geographical proxy of the FM 96.3 to the Addis Ababa business community are the major reasons for the switch. Accordingly, VAC is currently on air on FM 96.3 every Wednesday and Thursday from 12:30-7:00 p.m in the afternoon .
